35 years ago Jim Henson and his creative workshop brought to life one of the most amazing fantasy films of all time, The Dark Crystal.
A whole world very alien and still familiar to us, the story like many fantasy tales is the good overcoming dark times to change the nature of the world… for good. The film was especially unique as it was completed in its entirety with live action puppets of various creatures, not one human is seen in the whole film.
Netflix has finally picked up the legacy of The Dark Crystal and has begun making a series in exactly the same way as the original was, including the Jim Henson workshop. The project will be helmed by director Louis Leterrier (Now You See Me, The Incredible Hulk) and filmed in the UK.
For years a sequel has been brought up over and over again and seemed less likely with the passing of Jim Henson himself. However Jim Henson’s workshop has continued to grow and has been involved in the various muppet films, Sesame Street, Labyrinth and the cult TV series Farscape. Netflix has commissioned 10 episodes that takes place many years before the events of the film. The series is due for release in ‘fall’ and will no doubt cement a huge audience with the release of Star Trek Discovery at the same time.
