Star Wars is Coming…

By May 2018 we would have had four Star Wars Movies in a little over a 3 year period, that’s insane, and had you told us all that 10 years ago there would have been a collective snort of laughter but that’s the reality now. Not a year goes by (if not less now) where we don’t visit a galaxy far, far away. Last year a few weeks prior to the release of The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson was announced to be making a whole new Star Wars trilogy separate from the Skywalker saga. No other details have yet been announced as a project of that magnitude is easily going to be a six or more year journey.

As of yesterday the Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D B Weiss have also now been announced to be creating another different Star Wars series. The term series is a bit vague at the moment as it could mean anything from 2 or more films that are wholly individual like Rogue One or a connected series like the Skywalker saga… but who knows. David Benioff and D B Weiss also put out a rather honest statement about the new job that will start right after the final season of GoT finishes next year, “in the summer of 1977 we travelled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since. We are honoured by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete”.

Holy heck! That’s a lot of new Star Wars in the next few years. Right now a conservative guess – including the final Episode 9 in 2019 – will bring the total to 7 awaited Star Wars films. Whether David Benioff and D.B. Weiss films will alternate with Rian Johnson’s films is unknown right now but it seems logical based on our current knowledge. It seems as if the Star Wars universe could be as frequent as the MCU, which averages around 3 films a year…
